Renewable Energy Society was started on 5 June 2012 to increase the percentage of power generated from renewable sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, bio-fuels, tidal power, wave power or hydro electricity. It began as a RMIT University project in which a team of five people were required to write a business plan and project plan for a company. At the end of the project the team leader, Dr Mark Glickman decided to register an organisation. The society was registered with eight members on 23 July 2012 in the state of Victoria, Australia. Those eight members included close family members of Dr Mark Glickman, some university project team members, and friends of Dr Mark Glickman in Australia and Philippines. National registration was approved on 3 August 2012.
Nowadays Renewable Energy Society has members in Australia, Philippines, India, Uganda, Russia, Canada, China, United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Israel, Uganda and South Africa.
